2007 has started off with confusing weather, due to an almost complete lack of snow. But due to the excellent scientific knowledge of many great individuals, cold weather now allows our mountains to make their own snow. Therefore, even though yesterday was our first official snow day in Connecticut, I have been able to get in three weekends of snowing.
With my pass from the VSAA (one pass to each of 17 mountains in VT), I have had the opportunity to take my first samples of the excellent ski mountains that Vermont has to offer. So far I have hit Okemo, Mt Snow, Sugarbush and after tomorrow Bromley Mountain. I figure this is a good place to keep track of my experiences thus far.
My travel companion for these adventures is Travelers own Megan F., my co-worker in National Accounts we figured this would be a great opportunity to figure out what we liked in VT. I have only been skiing for three years (started at age 19), so I don’t know much about the mountains beyond Bristol in Rochester, NY and Sundown in New Hartford, CT.
On January 6th, we went to Okemo Mt in 60 degree weather with 23 trails open. There were more trails that were ready for downhill biking then skiing, but we were able to find some snow and get our skiing feet back under us. We carved some tight turns because of all the rocks we had to avoid. At least we had an opportunity to get the skiing back under us
The following weekend we headed off to Mount Snow with more wintery weather conditions and about 35 trails open. It was an opportunity to get back to the terrain park and see if I could learn to rail slide. It was an unsuccesful attempt but I figured I could continue to keep trying. We got a lot of good runs in on this trip and found the best hotel sign ever. I wish I had a picture, but the text of the sign will do it enough justice. There was a sign at a hotel on Rt. 9 in VT that said, “Come Sleep with Us”
